: Kalgoorlie Hotel is a representative example of the Federation Filigree style common in the Australian pub tradition as a two-storey hotel with verandahs, located on a street corner. The building is an important element of the streetscape of Hannan Street, enhanced by a verandah and balcony that extend over the pavement. Kalgoorlie Hotel has historic value as a demonstration of the development that occurred in Kalgoorlie around the turn-of-the-century as it became a service centre of the goldfields. Kalgoorlie Hotel is significant for its continuity of use.
: A two-storey stone building designed in the Federation Filigree style, c. 1890 - c. 1915, and built on a corner to the building line with a rendered parapet. A wide verandah and balcony extend the length of the facades over the pavement. The building is truncated at the corner which forms the primary entrance to the building. The building has some brick extensions to the rear. Much of the masonry has been rendered or over-painted. It has some notable leadlight glazing dating c. 1930. The ground floor valance is sheeted over. The detailing of the building exhibits all the Federation exuberance of the hotel industry at the time.
The building was established as a hotel and continues to be used as a hotel. "The building was originally named the Kalgoorlie Hotel. It was renamed Judd's Pub but when the hotel underwent major renovations in the early 1990s, it reverted to its original name, the Kalgoorlie Hotel" (Laurie, 1995: 27). General Comments: The role of hotels was crucial to the social and economic life on the goldfields. If mines were the sources of the miner's wages, the hotels were the sinks into which a lot of it was poured. Hotels not only provided alcoholic drinks, food and accommodation, but provided men with comfortable surroundings quite beyond their normal experience. Hotels were also vital social centres for travellers and residents alike (Webb, 1993: 543-544).
